Volunteer Background Check Fee to Remain at $25 Through End of 2018

The Polk County School Board has decided that the fee to cover volunteers’ background checks, as well as their badge and handbook, will remain $25 through the end of the calendar year.

Polk County Public Schools will be using more extensive volunteer background checks as part of our security measures to protect students and staff. The district will incur an additional charge for the statewide and national background checks.

However, through the end of 2018, the cost to volunteers will remain $25. We are exploring other funding sources to help offset the cost of background screening for volunteers on an ongoing basis. More information will follow.

A Word From Our Principal

Dear Families,

I hope you are enjoying the summer and have had the opportunity to spend some quality time with family and friends. The summer break is a great time to reconnect and make new memories. I have certainly made new memories by becoming the Principal of Scott Lake Elementary.  I am honored to have the opportunity to lead a school with such a rich tradition of education and community partnerships.

My passion for education and supporting the success of all students have been formed over the past twenty-five years. My first six years were spent in Tallahassee where I taught kindergarten and fifth grade. I then moved to Polk County where I have served in various roles including teaching third and fourth grade, reading/writing instructional support teacher (K-5), and assistant principal.  One of my most rewarding roles has been mothering my only child who is a successful product of the Polk County School System.  She attended public school K – 12 here in Polk County and is currently a pre-law student at Florida State University. In each of my roles, I have sought to ensure the success of every student by providing rigorous academic experiences while maintaining a fair and caring learning environment.

I know a change in leadership can bring a sense of both excitement and anxiety.  My goal is to get to know each of you and your children within the first few weeks of school.  I firmly believe that collaboration between the home and school can foster a rich and positive school culture. With your partnership and support, I am confident we can show tremendous growth in all areas this upcoming school year.  As stated by Mother Teresa, “I can do things you cannot, you can do things I cannot; together we can do great things.”

Fortunately, I have had the opportunity of meeting the staff and can honestly say they are truly dedicated and excited about the upcoming year. Together, we are ready to work as partners with you in providing the highest quality educational program possible for our students. This will be accomplished through consistent communication, high academic expectations for all children, and providing support systems to ensure they are met. I assure you that your child will have a safe learning environment in which they can thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.

As your Principal, it is important for me to know your concerns and to address them to the best of my ability.  You are always welcome to discuss any issues you have regarding your experience at Scott Lake Elementary.  I truly look forward to building positive relationships and a cohort of trust and support with each of you to ensure the success of all of our students.  By working together, we can make our school an even better place to learn and grow.

I look forward to meeting you soon,

Tangela M. Durham
